About Me

Marvin Uwalaka portrait

I’m a Computer Science student at the University of Alberta. I work with Python, JavaScript, SQL, and MATLAB and I enjoy applying machine learning and software engineering to real-world problems.

At the Rehabilitation Robotics Lab, I analyzed biomechanics and motion-sensor data to support health research. Outside of academics, I serve as Vice President of the U of A Black Students’ Association Events Team, play soccer recreationally, and enjoy taking on challenges that push me outside my comfort zone.

Experience

Data Science Intern

May 2025 – Present

The Rehabilitation Robotics Lab

At the Rehabilitation Robotics Lab, I analyzed large-scale biomechanics and motion-sensor data. My work involved cleaning and processing motion data, extracting key kinematic features, and performing statistical analysis to inform XR and digital health research projects.

I developed a rehabilitation outcome prediction model that achieved 85% accuracy, demonstrating that our kinetisense 3D motion capture system can reliably predict outcomes comparable to the Force Decks gold standard while offering a more accessible and scalable solution for clinical and research applications.

Full-stack Developer

May 2025 – Present

UNIYE

To improve engagement on a social platform with 500+ users, I was tasked with building interactive features and optimizing backend performance. I implemented likes, comments, and upvotes, enabling real-time tracking of user interactions. I optimized PostgreSQL queries and redesigned the schema, improving data retrieval efficiency and reducing average response times by 40%.

I also developed scalable backend services with Node.js and PostgreSQL for authentication, user profiles, content posting, and access control, ensuring secure logins and structured access to user-generated content. Finally, I designed personalized “For You” feeds based on user interaction signals, which increased content engagement by 30%.

Web Developer

Mar 2023 – May 2025

Sencelosia

To support community engagement and promote local events, I was responsible for designing and building a web platform that could handle user submissions and event listings.

I designed and developed a full-stack web application using Django, SQLite, and JavaScript, implementing backend functionality for user-generated content and event management while optimizing site performance and SEO. The platform generated $4,000 in revenue and attracted 2,000+ site visits, successfully supporting community engagement and visibility.

Projects

Apollo Event Lottery

Android application for fair event registration using a lottery-based waiting list system. Features include event creation, QR code scanning, role-based access control, and real-time data management using Firebase Firestore.

Balance Assessment

Validity and reliability study comparing portable motion capture with force plates for static balance assessment. Analyzed synchronized COM and COP data using Pearson correlation and Bland–Altman methods.

Goal Seeker

Interactive reinforcement learning simulator demonstrating Q-Learning and SARSA in a grid-based environment. Includes real-time parameter tuning to visualize exploration–exploitation trade-offs.

Adventure

I enjoy trying new things, especially experiences that are challenging, and outside my comfort zone. I believe the best learning and personal growth happens when you’re willing to step into the unknown.

Soccer team photo

Soccer

I’ve been playing soccer for as long as I can remember, competing with both my high school and city teams. I still play recreationally. Last summer my rec team went undefeated. I’m a Manchester United fan, and Cristiano Ronaldo is the G.O.A.T.
